What Should I Wear for Climbing? Your Go-To Guide

What Should I Wear for Climbing? Your Go-To Guide

If you're planning your first climbing session and staring at your wardrobe thinking, “Do I need anything special for this?” — relax. One of the best things about indoor bouldering is how low-maintenance it is. No need for fancy gear or performance wear. Just a few smart choices and you’re good to go.

Here's what to wear so you can climb comfortably, confidently, and distraction-free.

What to Wear for Indoor Climbing

  1. Stretchy, Comfortable Clothing: You’ll be reaching, stretching, pulling, and twisting your way up the wall, so choose clothes that move with you.
    • Gym leggings or joggers
    • T-shirts or tanks (bonus points for breathable fabric)
    • Long sleeves or layers in the winter months
    • What to skip: denim, baggy clothes that get caught, or anything restrictive.
  2. Climbing-Friendly Footwear: Climbing shoes are essential— regular shoes or bare feet won’t cut it. The good news? You can rent climbing shoes at Substation so there’s no need to buy anything before your first session. When you feel ready to own a pair of your own, we offer a bespoke shoe fitting service at reception so you can try before you buy.

Do I need a rope or harness?

No–bouldering doesn’t require the use of any harnesses or ropes.

Can I Wear Shorts?

Absolutely! But be mindful that climbing trousers or leggings can help avoid scrapes against the wall. It’s all about comfort and confidence.

What Do Kids Need to Wear?

If your little ones are joining us in The Wild (our kids-only climbing room), the same rules apply: stretchy, comfy clothing and closed-toe shoes. Kid-size climbing shoes are included with your booking.

Don’t Overthink It—Just Come and Climb

Indoor climbing isn’t about fashion —it’s about movement, problem-solving, and fun. Wear what helps you move freely and makes you feel good.
